"Be on the Lookout for Good People Not Presently Working in Sales"

It's funny, but I can really relate to this one.

How many times have I seen companies restrict their search to applicants with sales expertise? While a background in sales is important, the strong desire to work in the field tops just about everything else. You're right about looking for potential salepeople in former teachers, discharged military personnel, etc.

And yes, they're cheaper, too. That's a fact.

Ian,

I really like your "bench" analogy. Just like a baseball coach, there is nothing worse than having to go to the bench in the bottom of the 9th inning only to have nobody available. Thanks for the comment.

Not sure about those recently discharged military veterans Will....

Only joking!

One thing I picked up from the recent Topgrading for Sales book was the importance of maintaining a strong "bench" for recruitment in sales. Superstar sales people (like the salespeople in other companies, or those recommended by your existing superstars) who you are nurturing relationships with so you can call them when you need to hire. If you go into a recruitment drive without a strong list of high quality candidates you already know then you're in trouble.
